Bluegrass Legends Peter Rowan, Tony Rice Take Singletary Stage

The University of Kentucky’s Singletary Center for the Arts welcomes to its stage the Peter Rowan and Tony Rice Quartet for a performance at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 30, in the Concert Hall. Rowan, considered a major cult bluegrass artist of the 1980s, and Rice, believed to be one of the greatest acoustic innovators, will perform music from their first album together, “You Were There For Me.” Berea artists, Zoe Speaks, will open the evening’s performance.
Rowan started his career playing guitar and singing lead vocals as one of Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys for three years. Thirty five years later, Rowan is still influenced by Monroe’s work, even if his music at times wanders far from Monroe’s pure-as-mountain-water bluegrass style. Other musicians Rowan has performed with include Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Vassar Clements, Flaco Jimenez and John Kahn.
Rice is considered a mighty successor in a long line of musical icons that include Monroe, Doc Watson and Clarence White. Rice started his career by imitating the masters. As he further developed and expanded his technique and musical concept, he contributed to the music scene in various influential bands from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Among the bands Rice played with is the original J.D. Crowe and The New South, where he sang alongside Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Douglas and Bobby Slone. The band went on to have a huge influence on contemporary bluegrass.
Tickets to Peter Rowan and Tony Rice Quartet are $18 for general admission, and $15 for UK faculty, staff, students and senior citizens. Students can take advantage of a $10 rush ticket price 15 minutes prior to the performance. Tickets are available at the Singletary Center ticket office, call (859) 257-4929 or visit them online.
