Jammys Offer Eclectic Musical Mix

An eclectic mix of artists were on display last night (April 20) during the sixth annual Jammy Awards at New York's the Theatre at Madison Square Garden. A number of intriguing combinations hit the stage, including rediscovered soul vocalist Bettye LaVette with Blues Traveler, Peter Frampton with Guster and Joe Satriani with former Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins.The evening began with enduring folk artist Richie Havens performing a thunderous version of "Freedom" backed by performance art troupe Mutaytor and wrapped with an all-star run through Bob Marley's "One Love," featuring the late reggae icon's sons Stephen and Ky-Mani. The Marleys also ran through "Jammin'" backed by Little Feat, banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck and harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite.Frank Zappa was posthumously presented with a lifetime achievement award, while his music was saluted via performances of "Inca Road" and "Florentine Pogen" by his son Dweezil and Zappa Band principal Napoleon Murphy Brock.Frampton joined Guster for its "Beginning of the End" and stuck around for his own "Do You Feel," replete with his crowd-pleasing talk box effect. Satriani, Perkins, guitarist Steve Kimock and New Groove award winner Grace Potter put their stamp on Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer," while moe. got an assist from Mad Professor for a cover of the Clash's "Guns of Brixton."moe. also won live performance of the year for its Feb. 10, 2005, tsunami benefit at New York's Roseland Ballroom. Studio album of the year went to Mike Gordon and Leo Kottke's "Sixty Six Steps," while Phish took home archival album of the year for "Live at Madison Square Garden New Year's Eve 1995."The evening was hosted by Grateful Dead drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, who also hit the stage with Gordon, Baaba Maal and Angelique Kidjo for a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Chile" and the sing-a-long "Iko Iko."The Jammys served as the kick-off to the first Green Apple Music Festival, which runs through Sunday.
