Ratdog in Utah

Great show in Utah last night! Bobby spread the word and the band busted out "Salt Lake City." Bob sang the line "a plasma TV in every room." But when the Ratdog set was over and they hadn't played "Friend of the Devil," I thought we wouldn't hear the words "spent the night in Utah..." But Bob came out during the String Cheese set and led them in FOTD. String Cheese was off the hook and it was an amazing show overall. Great crowd (probably the best I've seen in Utah - way better vibe than GD '95, the Dead '04 or any other Utah Ratdog show).

String Cheese Incident is back

When The String Cheese Incident began touring, Utah was a regular stop, according to guitarist Billy Nershi.

"All the band members have been to Utah for spring skiing," Nershi said by phone from his home in Telluride, Colo. "Once Telluride Mountain shut down for the season, we'd head to Utah and hit the slopes on Alta and Snowbird. Then, after we'd done that, we would tour. And this is the route — Telluride, Crested Butte and Moab.

"And as we toured more, we began stopping in Salt Lake City to play. And we're looking forward to heading back to Utah on this tour."

It's been six months since SCI has hit the road, with band members Nershi, bassist Keith Moseley, violinist/mandolinist Michael Kang, drummer Michael Travis, keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth and percussionist Jason Hann.

The band had taken a much-needed rest, said Nershi. "We have been together for 12 years now. And we have been going at it real hard, and that has taken a big chunk out of the other parts on our personal lives."

That, said Nershi, is the reason the band is still together . . . not that it was having any intraband problems. "We knew we needed to replenish our energies. We got back together and began rehearsing and working out new songs we had and are ready to go back on the road.

"One of the secrets of keeping the band together is we always try new things. We are not afraid of each others' suggestions. We try them all. And some work and some don't. But the band is always morphing or evolving and every member has ideas."

A nice shot in the arm for SCI is being able to tour with Bob Weir's RatDog. Weir's tenure as the guitarist for the Grateful Dead was one of SCI members' musical influences. "We're excited to get on the road with RatDog. We'd like to play a couple of songs with the band and have both of the groups on stage at once doing a couple of tunes."

Jamming with heroes is one of the highlights of being in The String Cheese Incident, said Nershi. "We've played gigs with the Del McCoury Band, Ricky Skaggs. The list goes on. And it wasn't anything we tried to do. It just happened.

"We're not a band that has set ideas. We just do what we do. And if anything comes up, then we take the opportunity. We're a band. And we all know each other well. We know when to back off, and we have an in-depth knowledge of each others' buttons. And sometimes we're guilty of pushing some of them."
