News Briefs 01/27/07

The American Beauty Project

Over at Relix, Mike Greenhaus reviewed The American Beauty Project, which was at the World Financial Center in New York on January 20th & 21st. Another review, this one by Todd Simmons, can be found at DowntownExpress.

Jerry Garcia Biopic

Both Jewtastic & ContactMusic report the latest on Malcolm in the Middle actor Justin Berfield's efforts to make a biographical movie about Jerry Garcia. While the director and star of the movie is still being decided, Berfield (who played "Reese" on the sitcom) says he has someone in mind to play Jerry: “I’ve spoken with one person and he’s very interested in taking on the role. I can’t say too much because I’m not ready for this to become major news yet. He’s a very well-known actor.” A different article can be found at Cinematical.

Investment Advisor to The Dead

Monee Fields has an article atBloomberg.com about Silicon Valley investor Roger McNamee. Besides working with Bono, McNamee gave financial advice to the Dead:

"Once a week, he advised the surviving members of the Grateful Dead -- Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, Phil Lesh and Bill Kreutzmann -- on their investments.

McNamee says he built a plan -- called Bandwagon -- for the Dead, which would have allowed the rock legends and other bands to sell their music, concert tickets and T-shirts directly to fans."

Koons' The Future of Food

Deborah Koons Garcia's documentary on genetically modified foods "The Future of Food" was reviewed at TransWorldNews. I'm not sure why they focused on it now, since it came out about a year and a half ago. Here are a couple previous post I did about her movie: Deborah Koons & the Future of Food, Deborah Koons Garcia's Food Film, & Fox News' Steven Milloy criticizes Deborah Koons Garcia's film.

***ADDED 1/29***

ClassicRockCentral has part of a promo/interview radio show. Here's how their site describes it:

This 2-Hour program originally aired in 1981 to celebrate their 15th year, from "Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions" to the album "Go To Heaven".. This is a great show that has interviews with all Grateful Dead members. However, it is only two of the parts of the program, so you are only going to hear the first hour. We are still searching for the other two parts and will put it up as soon as we find them. But this first half is so great, we thought you would enjoy it for now. Sign up to get alerted when the other half is posted. Listen
Or, listen to the individual parts:

Grateful Dead Special - Part 2

Coming Up on this Blog

I'm still working on my reviews of Grateful Dead Gear and the new "Live at the Cow Palace) (12/31/76) CD.
